Moanalua Middle Ridge Trail to the Haiku Stairs

Oahu, Hawaii

Moanalua Middle Ridge Trail to the Haiku Stairs

Overview

This beautiful hike is an alternative way of getting to the Haiku Stairs from the Moanalua Valley side, without trespassing on the actual stairway.

The hike is difficult and includes steep inclines, and in some places ropes are used to climb up or descend.

The day of the hike

We were fortunate to have a perfect weather day and the trail was not crowded.

I suspect that most people are climing the Haiku Stairs and not doing this long trail from Moanalua Valley side.

We started the hike at 9:00 am and finished after more than 7 hours, with very little rest.

Tips

  • Due to narrow and muddy sections of the trail expect to get dirty. You won't regret wearing pants, and bringing a pair of gloves.

  • Bring sunscreeen or wear a protective clothing.

  • Most importantly, bring a lot of water (2L or more per person)

  • Mountain ridges are very windy, consider bringing an extra layer of clothing.
